Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
