The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Cartoon Journey with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance

Throughout this cartoon adventure for preteens, the world of fairies focuses on gathering teeth from slumbering youngsters and leaving gold under their pillows. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He’s only slightly more interested in the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold as payment. But Van’s curiosity grows when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the ugly gnome he had imagined.

A Forbidden Bond and Common Enemy

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a gentle touch of teen romance (though it’s perfectly appropriate for children). The fairy and goblin groups are separated from each other, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. The fairies are said to be entitled sorts, given to stealing whatever they fancy, while goblins are reportedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are in fact bright and technologically advanced.

Naturally, such a setup requires a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met in the form of a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Overall Impression

There aren’t very many animated films targeting the viewer group that is starting to experience first crushes, but are not mature enough for whatever 14-year-olds are watching in lieu of popular teen sagas. If your child falls into this age group, this is unlikely to be their next all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
